I am cycling my 75 gallon right now. It has a 20 gallon sump turning over around 5 times per hour or so (will increase as I improve my design). My girlfriend really wants a puffer but it will be me taking care of the fish. My question is what would be the best puffer or puffers for this tank. I am ok with fresh or brackish and will convert to full marine if I really have to. But I want a really fun fish. Something with all the personality everyone always talks about. Being able to keep a couple tankmates would be nice too but not necessary.

INBEFORE fahaka/mbu fanboy war in your thread. Upgrade your tank size and go with either of those 2 species, you'll love the personality of both.

I will not be upgrading my tank. I am currently renting and do not plan on anything larger then the 75 gallon I have now. Guess I should have said that. Either of those fish would be awesome but out of my size range for now.

green spots, figure 8's, pea puffers-all would love that size tank and you could have a decent school of them to boot.

Pea puffers as in dwarf puffers?

You would need a lot of dwarf puffers to make that tank look active and a crap load of plants for hiding spaces...

Personally, in a 75G tank, i would consider going with 3 South American Puffers (Colomesus Asellus) since they actually prefer being in groups, and are quite possibly the friendliest of all freshwater puffer species... you'll still need to add some plants and stuff to the tank though, and there is that one issue of possibly needing to trim their teeth...

Otherwise, if you want to go with something more aggressive, you could maybe look into some of the red eye species of puffer, although in that case, you may find you can only keep one or two in quite a heavily planted tank depending on the species you go with...
