I really love sting rays but never got one due to their size and necessary floor space. I got a 6 foot long by 15 inch wide tank now but hope to get something with a bigger foot print to house rays specifically. What is a good hardy beginner ray as I don't want to kill it after paying lots of money for one. I have been doing a lot of research, so don't tell me to look it up. I just want other people's opinions.

My opinion your tank would only be good for about 6 months if you got it as a pup. Motoros can get over 20" discs (16"-18") is a little more realistic in the aquarium world... retics or "teacup" rays would be your best bet for that size tank and a female would even out grow it in a couple years. They are usually the cheapest to buy however can be alot more temperamental feeders and harder to care for.

To answer the other part of your question. If you got a local bread motoro it would be the most hardy and easiest to take care of.

Motoro is the easyest and cheapest, so deffinetly the best first ray, but they do get big. But what ray doesnt? You can go for a retic, they are cheap, and not so tolerant, most of them are not good taken care off, and a hopeless case.

You can win in both ends, small ray, pretty hardy, but a litte hard to come by, hystrix.
