What's the best scorpion for a noob? I don't really want to hold it and cuddle with it, just something fairly active and not very needy.

Well you can't really cuddle with any scorpion
but the best newbie scorpion seems to be the emperor scorpion
and they are fairly docile too so should you decide to handle it, it would be safer than with a more advanced species

I was being silly. ;)

Emperor, by far a nice invert and easy to care for provided hubandry needs are met.. Do not make the mistake of putting these on a sand substrate. Reptibark, cypress and the like is what is needed.

Pandinus imperator by far is going to be the best for a beginner. I keep mine on peat moss and at room temp. I mist the enclosure weekly and provide a very shallow water dish for him. They are hardy, they are not aggressive, and they are big and interesting. I would say go for this. They are not too active during the day but at night you will see him crawling all over the place. This will be similar with all scorpions though.

Sounds cool, will it eat the cockroaches I breed?

yes, it will eat cockroaches. IMO they are far more eager to eat then tarantulas. I had an emperor, i used to hold it by gently nudging my finger on his back side until he walked on my hand. He never pinched or stung me.
My only concern with emperors is humidity. My later died bc it got stuck in a molt. I tried to help him but he couldn't get rid of his molt and died from it. From what i have read, getting stuck in a molt can be attributed to low humidity levels and is usually a death sentence.
