I have been out of the hobby for 5-6 years moving and traveling but had a lot of tanks for 10yrs before that. I have never gone bigger than a 125gal. I currently am moving into a long term rental home and want a new tank. What do you think the largest tank to safely have in a rental is? I don’t have anything too specific in mind stocking wise. How big can I go without worrying about the foundation or not being able to fit it through door ways if I move?

Easiest way would do a fish garage. Since its a cement floor should be pretty safe unless you go CRAZY large.
Inside the house I wouldn't push past a 6ft 125gal so long as you place the tank correctly across the floor joist.

Yeah I will have a garage that I know I could put tanks in. I just wanted to go with one tank in my office since I work from home. I am trying to compromise getting back into the hobby by spending as much money as I want as long as I keep it to 1 tank instead of 10-15 tanks.
Hello; I rented for many decades. Too many variables in home construction and condition to know what size the house structure can take. I was in a house with wooden floor joists so limited the biggest tank to only 55 gallons. I did have bigger tanks on the basement slab.
It is not so much the foundation nor fitting thru doors but the weight that was the deciding factor.
There have been many threads about floor capacity in this forum. They have a lot of good information if you do a search.
I have lived an a few upstairs apartments in my day and have luckily/successfully kept 2 100 gallon tanks in the same room and a 125g in the front room.
This time getting back into the swing of things I have taken a lot of chances at this apartment.
I currently have 4 55's, a 75g and several 20's.
I know we will be moving into a home next year in March (just renewed the lease) and look forward to being on a ground level dwelling.
But this year I will be paying close attention to the little creeks and sounds our floors make.
Might even have to go on a diet so I can shed some unwanted pounds and provide my tanks with the needed support. lol!
