Hello, I am currently cycling a 55 gallon, 48 by 12 by 20 something, and I planned on maybe getting a raphael catfish, and the tank will definitely have two of my 6 and 1/2 inch polypterus senegulas that are being upgraded from a poor ten gallon ( Poor Guys ) . I also wanted a catfish that would eat red rosy feeder fish and live earthworms, but would also only get 8 - 10 inches. However, I would want him to not suck slime, or eat or threaten any fish that are medium size ( 4 - 6 inches ).

Please help?

I am not so sure about adding a catfish when I know that my polys will claim the bottom of the tank.. Someone else could advice you I'm sure.

I thought only plecos suck the slime off of fishes?

Since most polys are cb will on the smaller side for sure.

Picture catfish should alright. Senegalus mouths are small enough that it should be fine. Can keep a group of them and will look great.

As far as plecos. They can eat the slime coat off any fish if not fed. So keep an eye out.

Picture will eat e-worms and feeders if dead on the substrate. They will also take regular prepared foods without difficulty.

Pictus cats are nice to keep in group but beware that if you have a weak filtration then your tank will be cloudy looking all the time, those pictus cats will stir up the bottom with their overly activeness.Lastly, don't feed them feeders because feeders do more harm to your fish health than giving them any benefit and cats fish never picky about food same for you senegals, you will have high change for disease outbreak with feeder fish.

I agree, when you get the feeders at the store without quarantining them for like a month, you most likely will get ich and god knows what else transferred to your tank. You've seen how crowded and neglected those tanks get. I would also avoid goldfish too, thiaminase is bad and they don't really have that much nutritional value. If you want to do live feeders, I would try to breed your own guppies. With proper water conditions large females can drop a ton of fry every month and guppies in general are a great hardy fish. I believe it's pretty easy to breed rosy reds as well. Both should be perfectly fine in your 10. Those and the earthworms (or frozen bloodworms too) should only be a small part of the diet though. Remember catfish are scavengers, so the live foods and a variety of flake and pellet food is the best way to go.

I second the pictus cats, they have a ton of energy and look pretty sweet in a shoal. I was going to get a raphael cat a while ago. They are pretty cool looking, and apparently they will croak if you hold them out of the water for a bit! They can also live over 20 years too. I believe there are 2 of those, the striped and spotted ones. Both stay under a foot, the striped gets bigger than the spotted. They are super nocturnal though, may want to build it a cave that you can see into.

Thank you thank you for all this advice,however...

I thought picture cats needed at least a 75

But if I can get them how many would you recommend?

THANK YOU
