tetra's and guppies.

white cloud minnows because

1 very hardy, if you do sumthing wrong they will prob still be fine
2 very cheap £1-150 ea
3 lively
4 good chance of them breeding(not as prolific as guppies tho)
5 if you get somthing big in with them they look great when shoaling, (mine are in with a gulper)
6 tasty feeder for when you get a monster lol

Those are both tropical (keep the temp 78 - 82). If you only have a few a 10 gallon would work.
But, in my opinion you should get a 20 gallon and a pair of convict cichlids. They're pretty hardy and much more interesting to watch than guppies or tetras. And if you get a male/female they'll most likely breed for you.

lol most likely, never kept them but was once told (when looking for feeders) the key to breeding convicts is to "make sure they stay wet":D

I have seen guppies living in water as cold as 65 degrees. If you buy pure fancy guppies they will be less robust since they have been line bred and have genetic weaknesses. Many goldfish tolerate very cold water (in ponds with ice on top), but again the fancy ones require a little more attention and a bigger tank (20 gallons).

I currently have a 5gallon with about 25 guppies and a 5gallon with two breeding mollies and 7 babies.

Don't get goldfish as a beginner fish... they are messy fish and require a big tank and lots of maintenance... whoever made them the 'classic beginner fish' should be shot ;)

I think a con, in a twenty gallon would be great for a first fish, just don't get a pair or you will be overrun from breeding in a few months. I feel any beginner should start with a small cichlid of some sort just because they are so hardy and can tolerate a wider range of water conditions than most other species.

Might go with the white cloud minnows they sound good, are they cold water fish??? and can a pair live in a 5 gallon tank or 10 gallon?? and do they need filters and heaters

thanks chris :)
