Sandy has hit me harder than expect. It had hit me hard enough that I lost 1 tank (glass completely imploded), and more than 80% of my stock. This had bothered me quite a bit. I lost my prized Arowana and Clown knife. Including a blood parrot.
Anyways, Since I am starting anew with a new stock (replacing the ones that died) I feel that Sand was not a good idea. Btw it was my first time using sand. Sand is a difficult substrate to use (pool filter sand).

The new stock will contain these fish - 4 Bichirs, 1 Arowana, 1 clown knife, 3 clown loaches, 1 TSN, 1 Blood Parrot, 1 high fin pleco and possibly 1 flower horn.

I understand that Alot of my fish can swallow gravel, but how many peoplea actually had this problem occur? Because I have plants and they didnt seem to o well in sand. and I dont think the beneficial bacteria reacted well with sand as well. So please any suggestions or ideas?
I really want to go back to gravel.

Btw tank size is a 275. 30 inches high 75 length 27 wide. Yes I know its a little small but Its sufficient for now. the arowana and clown knife are like 4 inches. same with the tsn.

I use gravel with everything I keep and I've had big cats big cichlids aros cichla gars frontosa pretty much everything you could think of and never once had an issue with fish swallowing gravel and that's 14 years of fish keeping with gravel so if you like the gravel look go for it I cant see you having problems plus 10 times easier to gravel vac and clean.....sorry to hear about the devastation sandy caused you hope all is well

I use diamond black sand. Dirt stays on top. Provides cushion for quick downward jolts of my fish. It counters the bright lights in my tank. Grains are big enough not to be siphoned by the filter inlet, too. Brings out the color in fish too as it serves as a strong background contrast. Even added wave makers for less vacuuming and to exercise my fish.
