I bought a new 210g tank and will be moving my IT dats there. I want to use tile as the substrate and want to get either black or white colored ceramic tile.

Which color substrate is best for them? And which would make their coloration better? I have them in a barebottom 60g right now and they're unstable most of the time.

White, but you should get like cream colored tiles. I would suggest sand to be your substrate though ;).

i have tried black moon sand and white sand both on a black back ground and found that in my case the dats colored up better with the white as they try to match thier surroundings best to be unoticed and the darker sand made them look really unstable but for my dats its comen for them to be stable befor feeding and unstable for an houer or two after

I've got dark colored slate tile right now and my ITs are unstable most of the time. White seems to be better, a lot of asian tanks that focus on datnoids use white substrate/background.

I've tried different colours over and personally found it made no difference at all

True Rob....
I have used White sand, brown/ orange sand, and BB. No difference at all. They display more for a day or so.... But don't be fooled, there just reacting to the tank change, and will go back to their normal state soon after.
I find tank mates, lighting and water quality are More affective at making IT more stable.
Always wanted to try tiles....
Personally I would
Spend a little more on some natural stone tiles. Silver grey granite with a honed finish. Which provides a highly polished and super smooth finish.
