I've been planning on getting a Fahaka. I've been researching and have been lurking on http://www.**************.com. After my research I've seen sand, gravel, and barebottom. I just want personal experience to see which you've had success and failed with. As far as maintenance, appearance, specific sizes and types.

Figured I might as well join and ask on **************. Since the activity in the puffer section here doesn't much traffic. Here is the link to my thread there. http://www.**************.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=20506

I use fine sand for mine and she loves to bury herself in it hehe

I could of sworn i left a reply here... oh well, but yeah i agree with sick08, best bet is to use a fine substrate for any puffer that could possibly bury itself... since at the end of the day they'll thank you for it since it won't scratch them up as easily when they do decide to bury themselves...

Mine never buried himself, unless he was stressed from something.

I'm actually setting up a brand new 120 gal tank for my 5 inch fahaka. I've kept them in the past, and I've raised them to monsters. This time I plan to do it right. I loading my tank with 4 inches of black tahitian sand. Very fine sub, that i'm hoping he likes because he seems to love the crushed coral sand I had him in my 30 gal tank so this should be a little easier on his skin. Just have to let this tank cycle and he'll be in heaven, can't wait!

I have mine with sand. He buried himself when he was smaller, but as he has gotten bigger, he doesn't bury anymore. He lays on the bottom 50% of the time. I would think sand is a little more comfy to lay on.

Personally, I wouldn't use fine sand for a 4" bed. You're just asking for either problems with anaerobic pockets of toxic gass or a real PITA job of stirring that deep send bed thoroughly (under all decor) every week.

No need to be rude!
