Hi everyone, im currently setting up a flowerhorn tank and unsure of which substrate to use. Just wondering what everyone is using in their tanks to get the best colours on the fish. Any advice/info appreciated.

NOT BLACK. Black gravel will make your flower horn look terrible. It makes many flower horn look like charcoal in color. Light colors are good. I like river stone, its got a great natural look and the light colors help flower horns look their best. I would also stay away from any kind of sand, Flowerhorns are very aggressive and like to move things around. Sand can get kicked up into the water and then sucked into your filters where it can tear apart and destroy your magnet drive motors found in most filters and the impellers.

I typically use natural pea gravel. It's cheap and seems to work well with them lol. I've got a red dragon in a tank with bright red gravel and while the gravel is ugly as sin it really makes the reds on him pop. Same goes with if your FH has a lot of blue pearls, a light blue / white gravel really will make them stand out.
