Best substrate for some convicts....

Does it make a difference what substrate we use for a tank with just 3 black convict cichlid's. I notice some say sand and some say small gravel or does it just matter what I want to look at lol.

I used to have some cons, and I used the small gravel. When they were getting ready to lay, they would move the rocks and dig new caves every time. It was cool to watch!

As longas they can move it it's good enough.

IME, if they can fit the gravel into their mouth it should be fine.

Have had mine with black gravel, they can move it no problem. Probably a darker substrate would be good if you like them to keep their darker looking appearance. White or lighter substrate might cause them to become paler looking in color.

I had great results with large flat rocks and plenty of medium gravel.
