What would be good tank mates for my 4 inch Male Jack Dempsey. I have a 125 gal with just him and a 9 inch Pleco.

depending on your jack temper and what u really want thats all up to you uve got some nice room for a few things>> just nothing that it can eat but keep im mind some jack can get grouchy i had my with oscars a jag and random catfish till i got another jack that became its mate then they shared the tank alone but u can get away with manly any other sa/ca cichlid

thanks I think he is pretty mellow , I just dont want to make a wrong choice, I will take any and all suggestions, Thanks

I have my JD with two oscars, flagtail, severum,*spotted leaf, a young flowerhorn, and some others, and it works very well. They can go with pretty much anything that gets as big or bigger than the JD will, as long as all fish can hold their own in a bout.

it depends on what you want.community, breeding, solo fish? you could get female JD,try to breed them.you could add a school of SD,or bigger barbs.or add 2 cichlids:nics,freddies,bocourti.salvini,syns.many options but you may have to get a few see how they grow out for a while as a group.sometimes as the fish hit adulthood, things possibly get rough.

thanks to all comments, and yes I think I would like to go with a community. Are there some fish I should avoid adding?

I would avoid grammodes, trimac, any red devils, hybrids, flowerhorns,I think they are great fish, but the chance that they make it long term in a community is low.

Carpintis, Oscars, Severums, Vieja/Paratheraps species, lots of options!

Is it hard to tell female jd s from males?

not too hard,i think JD female gets more blue in the chin/under mouth, also females don't get as large as males
