I've been poking around the web for info on driftwood as I am interested in incorporating some into my current setup. I am wondering the opinion of some of the people who frequent this board:
1. what are the best types of woods for a fish tank.
2. what is a reasonable price to pay for a piece of drift wood? in looking around I have found some pretty steep prices and I wasn't sure if this is normal or not...

any advice appreciated!

One ones you harvest yourself, because ...

... self-harvested driftwood is free :D:D:D

I just don't see the point of paying big $$$ for something that I can get myself, during a nice hike or canoe ride.

Call me old school.

Check the vendor( manzman) very reasonable prices and great and fast service. I have gotting some really nice pieces from him and it didnt cost me a fortune. Just did this whole tank for less than 80 bucks with shipping for the drift wood.

wow, that tank looks great, thanks for the tip! I've got to check that person out. and thanks to everyone else who offered advice as well- searching for some wood myself could be a fun.

I got mine from manzanita.com right there in Cal. you can choose the lenth and diameter, plus they have pics of the stumps. manzanita grows wild in higher elevations in Cal. so you can probably find some yourself.

Found some really nice pieces of drift wood along the banks of the river in my home town. Fish seem to like it and the price is great. I would suggest you at least see what you can find. Use a hardwood (non-connifer). And remove as much of the bark as you can. I give mine a few good baths of very hot water and chuck it in the tank. I just throw a couple rocks on it for a couple weeks and then its fine.
