just made the cabinet and hood for my new tank, i made it from solid pine and now just need to varnish it. just wondering what people use that is not toxic and will provide good protection to the wood?

I would probably use polyurethane. It offers good protection and isn't overly toxic to apply. Synthetic formaldehyde resin based products (such as Swedish Floor System) are even more durable but are very nasty to apply.
All the pieces i need to varnish can be removed except a 4 " piece around the bottom of the tank. does it make any difference if i use gloss or satin, or is it just a visual difference?
thanks for input
