The water supply in my area is treated with chlorine rather than chloramine. I have read that chlorine will dissipate on its own if the water is left standing. Is it better to just add water right from the tap and treat with Prime or other dechlorinator, or should I let the water sit in a holding vessel with an airstone for a day or so to let the chlorine dissipate naturally? I know tons of people use dechlorinators with no problems, but I tend to feel that it would be better if it can be done without chemical additives. Is it worth the extra hassle? Would a brand-new standard plastic trashcan be suitable for this purpose? I will be keeping SA cichlids, btw.

The best way to do it without chemicals. Is the way you said let it set with an air stone for at least 24 hours (maybe more) It doesn't really matter what type of holding container you use as long at it will hold water. I know people use brute containers for filters and I use rubbermaid containers to transport fish so either of them will work.

Welcome to MFK! :welcome:

Most people use Prime and other dechlorinators for fear of chloramine being used by your local water supply. Not all cities/counties are good about letting people know that they have made the switch. It's up to you though in the end. Yes letting water sit for 24 hours with an airstone should off gas the chlorine.
