what is the best way 2 get really red colouring in rbp's. ?

Krill!!!, anything with a high cartinoids(spelling??) this is what will bring out the red and orange colors in fish. the same thing that makes flamingos pink .i've also heard replicating the soft acid , native waters where they are found will help.i've been feeding my babies basically nothing but "Jumbomin" about 3x a day and they've grown from dime size to quarter size in about 3 weeks. . the anal fins all turned red (bright red) first and now i'm starting to see red in the gill covers and belly area.:headbang2

what is krill? is it like the size shrimp or somthing? My p's are from 5"-7" long and like to eat larger things, they wont eat blood worms anymore

no Krill are shrimp, small, but not tiny. maybe 1/2-1" long. you can buy them frozen or freeze dried. and actually whole shrimp will work that you can buy from the seafood dept. in your grocery store. i have also heard people using Hikari Bio Gold pellets with much success.the jumbo min food sticks from tetra are made with lots of "live foods" including shrimp ( natural red color enhancer) if they won't eat prepared foods then give 'em whole shrimp and that should "color 'em up" quite nicely.

want really really red rbp? then buy a super red rbp lol. other then that all you can do is keep up with there diet and hope for the best. give them a good veriety of foods and you'll be surprised. i grew mine from dime sized, they sprouted to almost 3 inches within a month. its like there on steriods... all i feed mine are hei feng super-gold tropical pellets, krill, shrimp, and silversides...

when i use to have red bellies i fed them color enhancing pellets as part of their diet and that seemed to do wonders for their color. A large bag is inexpensive and last a long time.
i don't know if larger rbp's will eat it if you try and introduce it when they are already a large size. I started feeding my the pellets at about 1 and a half inches and then when they were large 5" - 7" they were already use to it being part if their diet.

The ONE MOST IMPORTANT thing that i have noticed brings out the vibrant red in the red bellies is low stress!!! Obtaining this environment takes a large combination of things.
1) A well varied diet.
2) Good water Quality.
3) The right tank mates.

A well varied diet of live and non-live food. I agree with many of the other posts that advocate krill my piranhas thrive on krill although it is not one of their natural prey, all my piranha go crazy almost jumping out of the water for it. They also eat worms, Large tropical flake, frozen beef heart and always live feeders. The next step to having vibrant colored fish once they have a well rounded diet is water quality.
Piranha indeed like a lower PH say 6.4 or so, adding root wood and live plants helps maintain this without adding any ph down to the water however it is most times necessary in lowering the ph. Piranha also love a ton of filtration, water movement and fresh water. These fish require a good amount of food to sustain their metabolism so you have to keep in mind that they are a large waste producing fish especially when feed live fish so keeping up on water changes is KEY!!! The more they eat the more they drink, the more waste they produce, so change their water!!!
Finally piranha are a illusive fish who seldumly live up to the hype, however that is why we all love them so much. So it is important that they get along with all their tank mates. If you have say one nasty ass serr. roaming the tank who nippes fins, eats first keeps the others hiding in the corner etc... the other fish are omiting negitave theramones which are a fishes natural predatory energy. And if suppressed by a more dominate tank mate they tend to stress the hell out and it deffinatly shows through their coloration.
I know this was a long long... post but really if you want bad ass head turning fish you must not slack on any of these matters. They are all importent in keeping these type of fish.
