Ok what is the beat way to have a pair start breeding do you need to of the same species or can you just have two africans???? And how do you check if there are male or female? ???

That is a really vague question. Some africans can cross breed. To tell the difference between males and females, that depends on the species. Some are dimorphic which mean the females and males look different, or they can be monomorphic which means they look the same. Often people will tell you about eggs spots, but that is not reliable. The only sure way on monomorphic species is to vent them.

They should be the same species. Because they will easily cross breed and it is not always easy to tell different species apart (even when they are pure), cross breeding Africans is generally considered irresponsible and bad for conservation. Any crossbred Malawi fish should be culled or used as feeders and should never be sold, given away or taken to pet stores for resale. It's just bad for the hobby.

i think you should look at afew species that you think look nice . ask on here if there suitable for your size tank. if they are both same species or even different it dnt matter, bcuz as long as they stay in your possession, its okii just dont re sell or give away.

besides its nice to see what pops out lol

Best way to breed. Buy a bunch of juveniles and when they grow up sort it all out. I've tried buying by sexing at the store and the added stress of being there I always end up with the wrong gender. For example I bought a red reuben peacock male that turned out to be a very pretty female. Yeah it has a weak but apparent red coloration and I payed male prices. Now its holding fry. I would say cheapest way is go to a trade show. Buy a bag(7 or more) of fry for a species you like. Drop em in a 55 gallon tank and feed and wait. While waiting read about breeding behavior. If you have a pairing species then you'll want to separate out the pairs into separate tanks. If you get a harem species or something just leave one male in the tank for every 3 females you get. I when you see the females holding bounce them to a fry tank till they release the fry then put them back in the breeding tank. feed fry live brine shrimp or something.

If your cichlids are adult size and have more females than males, nature should take it's toll. Clean water also helps with breeding.

I noticed my haps and peacocks would breed after water change

physically? no, you don't need the same species, two similar species will commonly mate, however it's generally frowned upon if you sell/give these fish to others... This is because then these hybrid fish get into the market and people end up buying hybrids when they're paying for pure breeds...

Well....I usually start with candel light, some red wine and a really good juicy steak, with a chocolate dessert. That gets em everytime!
