I was wondering if anyone knew the best foods to fatten up a fish? I am specifically talking about a datnoid and when I bought him, he was significantly underweight. Now, he seems much more perky and healthy, but still has that "sunken in" look. Any ideas? Oh, he won't eat pellets. I have been feeding chopped raw shrimp and sometimes silversides.

you're feeding good sources of protein. also add in tilapia and nightcrawlers and keep working in the pellets. eventually, he will take them. my dat is a pig and eats everything.

I have been trying on the pellets, even putting them inside the frozen foods, but he finds them and spits them out... lol. My original dat will eat anything, but this guy must have never been attempted with pellets so he just ignores them.

I'll try adding more to their diet.

i'm not sure how big he is but if he's not too young and once he fills out, starve him for a day or two and he should take a pellet.

oh, at that size, he should be stable. once you start to notice weight gain, try starving him for a day. then throw in pellets. before starving, give him some time to adjust and start eating regularly. then try the starve and pellets. it sounds like he's been slightly malnourished, so wait awhile.

he's correct. i forgot about beef heart.

phillydog, your plan was exactly what I was thinking about doing originally with this dat, to convert him to pellets. I have been so concerned with getting his weight up, that I kept forgetting about it.

Also, I don't know why I forgot completely about beef heart! Duh.

Thanks guys.
