I've been interested in keeping a salvini. Wanted to know the best way keeping them.
Pair / solo with - without dithers / in a large community with large fish midas, Oscar etc / small community with similar sized fish - convicts, fm, etc.
I've got a 36*18*18 tanktank , so it's either solo / pair / small community.
Do share pics if you've had one.
Thanks

What a coincidence. I just pulled 4 F2 Trichromis Salvini from my Growout of 12 to add to my 320G Upper Bladen River, Belize biotope. (The group I have the wild grandparents are from Rio Candelaria, I know somewhat cheating having them in a upper Bladen River display, but the Salvini here are extremely poor quality so having these is very rare. Plus T. Salvini is found in the Upper Bladen ?)

In my experience, they are highly aggressive. Imagine the personality/ aggression of an Amphilophus / Parachromis in a much smaller fish. In my opinion the tank size you mentioned is too small even for a solo male or female.
The Growout group I have even at 2-2.5 inches were highly aggressive and took out a group of Xiphophorous Montezumae.

Their nickname is ‘the pocket battleship’ and it is well deserved

Is this you or is this you?

Agree with stiker.
The tank you mention would only work for 1 individual, no tank mates, especially not South Americans like oscars, salvini come from Mexico and northern central America, so are on an entirely different and heightened aggression scale, and their water parameter requirements are opposite.
I could only keep 1 mated pair in a 6 ft tank, no other cichlids, or not even dithers.
In nature they share waters with Astyanex tetras, so maybe some of those in a 6 ft tank, if they could be acquired large enough (almost the size of the salvini.)

Best solo female w/ that tank size. Maybe livebarers. Fry are snacks lol. Have always kept them w/ swordtails and no issues.

Any pics to share .
Btw what if I replace livebearers with maybe some fast Buenos Aires tetras . The livebearers (molly/platy) we get here are very inbred and don't survive long . And guppies would be snacks imo

Yup. Most I’ve kept in a 150g and 55g mostly w/ thorichthys. Come to think of it, I’ve always kept salvini w/ meeki. Mine never killed swordtails or tetras. Only ate fry like the thorichthys all do. My salvinis have been very chill. Not killing anything, just hang out like these pics. They wouldn’t hide but wouldn’t move much either.

Tank size is everything w/ salvini. They probably would kill anything in a small tank like most cichlids do. A 3’ tank is not ideal and they will become aggressive. IMO/IME more of a territorial fish than an aggressive one.
