I have a 40 breeder in my upstairs hallway which I want to move downstairs to the living room. How much water should I drain out? I am going to put the fish in buckets of course, but I just want to know how safe it is moving a tank with a few inches of water in it downstairs... Should I just drain it all?

Any help would be appreciated, I know many of you have moved tanks before...

drain it as much as you can. not only will it be heavy but it will also make a mess as the water splashes all over your stairs

Weight's not really an issue for me...

The thing I am concerned about is the pressure on corners and sides of the glass... I just don't want a seal giving way.

better safe than sorry...drain it all and replace with new water, just make sure the parameters match. or you can keep half of it in buckets and it would be just like doing a 50% water change :)

Drain the whole thing. If you can save some of the water but its not that critical. Even if you had 10g of water left in it, it is still 80lbs worth of water plus the tank and substrate. Going down the stairs would also put a lot of strain on the seems....just not worth the risk IMO. Good luck with the move!

Thanks guys. I'll just drain it all... I'll have at least 5g of water left (from the buckets that i'm going to keep the fish in)... I'll see if I can buy a couple more buckets too.
