First, thanks to all who respond ahead of time. I've been an aquarist for a long time and I'm familiar with cycling etc so no need to get deep into the basics. My issue is this. I am finishing my basement/fishroom and doing so will have to move my tanks. Right now I have two I need to move but they are currently stocked. In order to move them I am going to need to empty most of the water and remove the fish. Not only that but I figure since I'm doing it Im going to do a complete overhaul. Im changing out my gravel substrate and going with the black diamond blasting media that I've been hearing tons about. So I will have all new substrate. Also in the new location I will have to completely change filters on both the tanks. WHat is the best way to go about doing all these major changes and then replacing the fish without killing them? All suggestions welcome. By the way, I'm going from HOB filters to canisters so they can be hidden under cabinets. THe tanks are being built into a two way veiwing wall. The fish are both large cichlids. Thanks again!

You can put your filter media in a temporary 10 gal.tank with airstone and some kind of feeder fish to make waste and keep BB alive.for fish use big tupperware bins or coolers with sponge filters.oh start sponge filters now in your tanks so they will also hold BB

I'm thinking ill buy a divider for a 55 and put both fish in my 55 while I do the change but as far as BB could I put the new filter media(ceramic rings) in their tanks now to start building before I move it to the next filter. But would they colonize faster in the being dropped directly in the tank or should I place them in the filter?

I could put the new media for the canister (ceramic rings) in their current setup but would it be faster to grow a colony if placed directly in the tank or in the filter? For the fish I think I'm going to buy a divider for my 55 and put them in their (after giving away the tetras) but I wonder how trust worthy is the divider?
Sorry for the double post. My phone didn't register that the last comment posted.

I would make the divider if I were you.the only one i have seen in stores would not hold back cichlids.the BB would need to be fed to multiply and thrive.if you can run the filter on the tank with media,it would need ammonia from waste, throw some cheap fish in.white clouds, guppies, etc.

I think in the DIY section there is a sticky. I used that or another sites idea I forget. It is basically a piece of lighting difusser found in hd or lowes.cut to fit, then use suction cups or built a frame out of pvc and use ty wraps
