Best way to setup an auto top off?

I have my 210gal going on the 1st floor and the filtration/sump in the basement below. Can I setup the auto top off on the sump? Would I need to run anything extra to the tank itself for the top off?

get a float valve and drill it in your sump and a 35-55 gallon trash can and have a hole drilled in it and make sure its always filled and have the trash can higher up then the sump and so you have a gravity fed auto top off system...thats the simplest way but not the best i think...
