Hi,

I'm in the process of switching over to a planted tank and am about 90% done. I've got the substrate all setup (using 3 layers of different ADA Amazonia substrate), have my CO2 setup (using inline diffuser on the filter return hose), have the lighting already setup (four 6500K power compacts), and have my layout.

I bought some driftwood on ebay, I've boiled them (to help remove the tanins so that the water doesn turn brown), after it cooled when I put them into the tank, they float! I've left them floating for a few days and it looks like they dont want to sink.

Does anyone have any suggestions for sinking the driftwood? tie rocks to them? any recommendations on a safe water glue/silicon that'll work on rocks and wood?

Had I known the driftwood would float (I'm a planted tank noob), I would have installed a beneath the gravel type of filter and anchored the driftwood onto them before putting in my substrate.

Please send me your suggestions!

Thanks

Mike

I'm open to any suggestions that anyone might have.

Anchor it to slate with brass screws. Some driftwood will never stop floating.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you think I should predrill the slate/rock before using the brass screws? Or will this break or cause the slate/rock to crack when I use a screw with a bigger thread?

def slate. drill a hole in the slate first. you can use a normal bit but wet the stone while you drill and you should be good. but make sure you use thick slate bc it may still float the slate if its bouyant enough

Ya sorry shouldve mentioned that. Good place to grab slate is at the home Depot, go to their flooring section. There you will find they have 12 x 12" slate tiles, which are thin enough to hide under your substrate

i boiled my driftwood with some salt...

How did it taste :grinno:

Hmm, that sounds interesting. How much salt did you use?

I mean if you use too much and let it boil long enough, I would think that when the water evaporates, all that you have left is the salt on the driftwood, something not good for a planted tank :^)
