Well title says it all what's your best.

My tank has half a hood and I do 50% water changes every 3-5 days.

Smelling something means you are detecting chemicals. While in rare cases this could be due to your being overly sensitive or your having a disorder that misinterprets smells, it's mostly due to actual chemicals. Having an open area over the water provides a chance for chemicals to enter the water column.

1) add carbon to adsorb chemicals
2) vacuum the substrate (carefully)
3) change the filter media
4) examine the fish for possible diseases/parasites
5) use different foods
6) air out the room
7) wipe down the area around the tank

One of these is likely to correct the issue.

I should've been clear its more for other people. Cause my landlord came to do inspection of the apartment. Now my apartment has always had a strong ammonia smell in it but she tried to blame it on the tank.

I changed the filter floss yesterday with the water change. As far chemicals the only thing I use regularly is prime. Not sure if that's what you mean by chemicals thou.

I don't have anything resembling an odor coming from my tank. All I use is bio and mechanical filtration, I use no chemical filtration. I also do 50% wwater changes twice a week. I firmly believe the best way to avoid odor is to properly maintain your bio. It's a case of treat the root problem, not the symptom.

That being said, at times things can happen that aren't routine that would require extra attention. I don't care to speculate on those at this time though. There's way too many things that could be causing it to be able to guess without seeing what's happening.

Drstrangelove's advice is good for how you can treat your current problem.

Moved to setup and filtration

Hello; Do you or someone in a nearby apartment have cats? This has been the sorrce of ammonia smells indoors. Being an apartment building it is possible for odors to come for nearby apartments. I lived in one and had cigarette smell come thru from another apartment, turned out there was an open ventillation duct that was common between the apartments.
As stated by others a tank in good condition has little smell. In the past some of my tanks would smell and I discovered that excessive feeding was the main problem. Some types of food also have a strong smell.

Not sure cause we aren't allowed pets so it could be the reason why the previous tenants left or got kicked out.

I think its highly unlikely that your tank is the source of the ammonia smell. Ammonia smell is usually from cat urine. Do you have carpet in your apartment?

Yes we do.

If your tank had enough ammonia to be noticed by smell then your fish would die very quickly. If it is the water that's causing the odor then a couple water changes should clear it up in a couple days. My roommates often complain about my tank smelling when I don't smell a thing and I have a pretty acute sense of smell so often times they are smelling an open container of food I forgot to close or some carpet got wet and is smelling like mildew. Add an extra water change or two to your routine and clean the area around the tank. If that doesn't fix it then the problem is likely another source

I highly doubt the smell is coming from the tank. But it's just frustrating cause its coming down to me having to get rid of my tank.
