I don’t really like hybrids which is what put flowerhorns off for meA Flowerhorn would make a good wet pet. Kinda like an aquatic puppy. Not so sure how it would do with bottom dwellers though. Perhaps a bichir.
I thought about these guys, were they interactiveParatilapia sp. are quite personable, but my experience with them is that they can be highly territorial and may not tolerate tank mates.

Shubunkins and plecos. Shubunkins are all over the place and super interactive with each other and me. My galaxy pleco is beautiful but shy. My gold spot pleco is active day and night. And his sail fins flutter beautifully.I thought about these guys, were they interactive
I hear you. They aren't for everyone. As suggested above, an Oscar would certainly fit the bill, although they may be a little more common than what you are seeking .I don’t really like hybrids which is what put flowerhorns off for me
