Not too unusual for dissimilar tank mates to become friends to the exclusion of the others in their midst, something I've witnessed several times in my aquariums when species even from different continents will show an affinity for each other for reasons only known to them. Many symbiotic relationships occur in nature of course when one species can benefit from the other for survival or feeding advantages but sometimes different species just enjoy the company of another…

Used to have a tomato clownfish that spent all its time following and hanging out with my striped bulldog puffer, they even slept in the same hole in the rock

Lol I think most species like or don’t mind bichirs my old wolf acted as a guard dog for them. Only ever had one fish that actively attacked bichirs which was a pike Cichlid of the sax group. Even the wyckii I had mostly ignored them. Definitely wasn’t after them like he was with other cats and the wolves.
