I was thinking about breeding two bettas. I have most of the information I need, but I do have a few questions that maybe you guys could help with?

1. Do I absolutely need to get the fry special food, or can I powderize regular food?

2. Estimated how many fry often survive? (Need to find homes for most of them, less fry would be better.)

2. Do the breeding bettas need to be the same type?

3. Do I need a license to sell the bettas that I breed?

thanks, sorry for the rush in this post. When I get on tomorrow I will explain the potential setup =)

For tropical fish I do not believe you have to have a license, the bettas dont need to be the same type, I dont know on the fry survival rate, and if you get hikari first bites as opposed to just ground fish flake then it will grow faster.

Potential setup:

- 5gal divided tank with a power filter (suggestions? There is one that comes with the tank but idk what kind).
- acclimate male and female to each other, give them time to get ready
- male fertilizes eggs
- move the female to my ten gallon (only has two little corys in it right now, with available hiding spots, the male is there right now)
- keep the male with the eggs until the fry hatch, then move him to my tank and the female to a bowl
- feed fry

My male is currently in my 10gal with a sponge power filter and a bubble wand. He keeps trying to make a nest, but the small current keeps popping all his carefully made bubbles. Will this stress him out? Or will he continuously attempt to make a nest?

thanks for the feedback so far =)

The male is also harrassing my two young corys I have in the tank. Is there anyway I can stop it? They have hiding spots, but the betta can fit in all but one, and he waits for when they come out and try and get food.

1. Do I absolutely need to get the fry special food, or can I powderize regular food?
- personaly never bred bettas, but i have looked into it alot, and a friend of mine has, not too sure about the food, have heard some tips but not entirely sure how good they are.

2. Estimated how many fry often survive? (Need to find homes for most of them, less fry would be better.)
depends, fry need multiple feedings a day otherwise you will have many die off very quickly, this depends on how well the care is, in some of my other fish i've bred i had as low as 4 survive and sometimes 50+

2. Do the breeding bettas need to be the same type?
no, they dont need to be the same, but usually interbreeding wont turn out too well, in general it is better to stick with the same type of male and female (say halfmoons for example, both M and F).

3. Do I need a license to sell the bettas that I breed?
not that i know of, if your looking to sell the offspring, you can either sell to people either on C-list or elsewhere, or find a petstore/fish store that would buy them from you, although alot of fish stores would buy fish, they would just take them as donations, and if you do find a fish store to sell them to, the price they buy them for will be very cheap, because they want to make a profit from what they buy.

Good luck with breeding.

@romosoldier thanks!

I didnt think about just giving them to my LFS. I get a lot of my stuff there, my rents used to get all their stuff there. (with discounts cuz i know them well) and i probably owe them a bit. even though they are overpriced lol.

The interbreeding makes sense,. as do your other replies =)

hey! breeding betta do not need a power filter! they form a bubble nest and i'm afraid it will destroy it like u said! as they can do it without any air pump or anyting of the sort , i recommend that you do not place any. just place them in the tank , and provide ur female a hiding spot, not too many and messy ofcuz, as the male might have trouble finding her and they may be see-ing each other like once or twice a day, this would decrease ur chances of letting them spawn. after the spawning, remove the female carefully so she can heal and will not further get injured by the male. also , they do not need to be the same type. any type will breed as long as they are a mature male and mature female. but do note that its better for the male to be larger so it can wrap around the female properly to release the egg. high numbers of fry can survive if you provide them with clean water and proper food. i have like 150+ surviving in a spawn and sold them all. you do not need a lisence but u need buyers! and its best to provide them with live food as they may not be too keen on dried food like crushed pellets. trust me, u can see alot difference in their appetite when u add in food like newly hatched brine shrimp! when they are alittle older, you can feed them daphania/water fleas. when they get big enough you can feed them bloodworms or tubifex worms provided you have your own culture of healthy tubifex worms! good luck! :D

1. Do I absolutely need to get the fry special food, or can I powderize regular food?

You can feed your newborn fry freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. I've tried using powderized food and it just doesn't work when they are first born because the food doesn't move around so they just see it as debri and therefore won't touch it. Sort of like baby snakes.

2. Estimated how many fry often survive? (Need to find homes for most of them, less fry would be better.)

Normally you will get between 50 to 100 fry at first and slowly that'll just widdle down to the ones that are the strongest but be prepared for large rates of survival if you care for them properly.

3. Do the breeding bettas need to be the same type?

The only difference in "types" of betta is the shape of their tails. You don't need to have the same tail type but it is recommended that you don't breed veil tails, the really common ones, because those sell for the cheapest and in the betta world they are not looked highly upon.

4. Do I need a license to sell the bettas that I breed?

You don't need a license to sell the bettas that you breed as long as your just selling them to your LFS. If you are planning on shipping them worldwide by using aquabid or some other aquatic retail site then I would suggest doing some more research on what your country says about shipping live animals over the border.

you don't need a license in selling bettas, the best food fro them is the baby brine shrimp and microworms if you have any as their first food, the betta fry that often survive is the one who are strong enough to survive.

thanks, sorry for the rush in this post. When I get on tomorrow I will explain the potential setup =)

1)bettas need to be fed with microworms ofr the first 2-3 days and then feed them on freshly hatched baby brine shrimp for the next couple of days till they are able to accept chopped tubifex, remember, live food + regular water changes = fast growing fish, i start changing water for my bettas after about they reach the 2 week mark, after its 50% daily and 90% once a week, this way my bettas reach adult size in about 3.5 months,

2)the min fry count that i got from my bettas is 50, normally i get about 200+ fry and on ocassions i have counted upto 500 fry, the better care you take care of the fry the better the survival rate, also the fry count depends on how the parents are conditioned,

3)Half moon bettas are high in demand and they are worth breeding, going for any other bettas like veiltails etc.. you wont get much value, they are the cheapest i the market and sell for almost negligible $,

4) best bet for selling would be to find other betta breeders and pass em on or excahnge them at the LFS, in our country we dont require any licence to breed and sell fish on a hobbyist basis, check what at yours,
hope this helps,
