Betta channoides - gills?

My Betta channoides male is holding eggs and I have noticed when he not in his darker color (he changes from brown to dark red) that there is some whiteish areas around his gills. Can anyone help me identify and treat the sickness it any?

The pair are in a 18 gallon and a ton of snails.
