my girlfriend called a couple of minutes ago and said she noticed white dots on her betta and on some of the neon tetras. after learning more info about the fish's reaction, i'm pretty sure it's ich. her tank temp is approx 68degrees. she does not have a heater in it(cause it's too small to use a heaank closer to the radiater to rise the temp. and i'm pretty sure i should add salt, but i'm not sure if bettas are tolerant to salt, and how much i should add.
is there anything else i should do? separate the tetras and the betta, take the gravel out and wash it and let it dry to kill the cyst.
she really loves her betta, so i really don't want it to die.
thanks guys. oh and her tank is about 1.5 gallons with a betta and three neon tetras.(it was my christmas present for her) she does water changes every two to three days.

thanks man,
would it be better to separate the fish and the substrate so i can dose the substate more intensively?
and she also has a plant in there.

Scorponox you baffon, why would anyone add 7 tablespoons per 1.5 gallons? 2 Teaspoons per gallon is required. heating the puddle to 82F is best, because if left at this temp, it may take weeks for the parasites to disapear. Add malachite green as recommended. The reason why it has ich is because of the temps.

get the fish with the actual visible spots in a hospital tank, and treat that fish with maracide or coppersafe.

and then also treat the tank with a half dose of it.

DO NOT add 7tablespoons, that will increase the salinity level too much. don't listen to scorponok

Cleary this person does not have a hospital tank. 2 teaspoons per gallon takes 5 seconds. Even one tablespoon will raise the specific gravity level far too high.

ALSO mystix212 you're also mistaken not per gallon!
when treating ich raise temp to 86F 2 tablespoons of salt PER 5 GAllONS... Not per gallon

in a normal healthy tank 1 tablespoon(or no salt) per 5 GALLONS. FIVE. not ONE

I said teaspoons not tablespoons.

anyways the ich is because of temp as mystix did say and correct about the salt remedy also
but in future you would want to keep the temp a little more than 75 as bettas are supposed to live in shallow waters where the climate is almost always hot
keeping the in low temp may cause
-ich
-fin rot
one better way is add a bulb to the setup i use a 40w bulb to keep the 3g tank warm
but then again i live in southern india where the temp doesn't drop too much, you could use a higher wattage bulb
