I am breeding a pair of bettas at the moment. everything looks to be going well, except my male betta apparently is having a hard time with building his bubble nest. It starts out pretty well, but then seems to never progress even though he is working pretty hard at it. any suggestions that might help him out?

How strong is the flow in the tank? IS there any or is it just a vase-type setup? If there's a lot of flow it could be getting ripped apart that way. Take a peice of tupperware or a 2 L soda bottle with the top cut off and invert it in the tank so it stays floating. Make sure it is stationary, and this will allow him a spot of water with a calm surface to build it.

it is in a 5 gallon tank with no filtration for that reason. Also I have a styrofoam cup that I cut in half and placed in there to help keep his bubble nest collected.
