Betta tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept and seen many that keep bettas with guppies in large tanks with a lot of plants. Angel fish, gold fish, other livebearer fish might work as well. Male angel fish can be aggressive afterthey reach maturation but the plants keep them from chasing the bettas. Goldfish can sometime get their fin nipped by aggressive male bettas but they rarely come down from the top to do that and if the goldfish are big enough it doesn't matter that much. Guppies and other livebearer will just out run betta all the time, some babies will be eaten by the bettas but it will not hurt once their population begin to kick in.

Preferably things that don't have flashy colors or long flowing fins (like guppies).
Corydoras are the most common suggestions as they occupy a different level of the tank and are quite peaceful. Khuli loaches would be another one.

While some of the fish already mentioned may outrun the betta or may not be all that bothered by it nipping them...they can go after the betta. I frequently hear of guppies & angels tearing bettas up. :(

I've got loads of rosy reds I use as feeders. Could I add a shoal to give the tank so "life" so to speak? Or are they fin nippers?

Agreed I had a bad experience with angels tearing up the betta in my girlfriend's tank.

So my males can't be placed with rosy reds, my females should be alright with them though correct? Or do they prefer being alone?
