I have a 125 [72x18] and just wondering what, if anything, can go under my 120 pounds of sand to enhance plant growth. I have heard it is recommended you do this. Any suggestions? Anything cheap?

Thanks!

Under the sand? Root tabs would help but I've never personally used them. I think they might have been the missing element to help my hairgrass spread

I do dose liquid fertilizer [on a carbonless tank] but I have heard you can add another type of substrate under the sand to put the roots in.

Yeah, these:

Water column fertilizer can only do so much for plants that draw nutrients in through the substrate.

yea your probably thinking of laterite/flourite. I just used flourite as a substrate, but it's really not super necessary. I really don't think it helped all that much in all honesty. I didn't even manage to get a nice carpet of hairgrass to grow, and this is with high dosing, co2, and 3 wpg of light
