What is the name of the stuff you guys use between the tank and stand? Is is like rubber or highly resistant foam?

styrofoam?

Yeah a lot of people use thick sheets of Styrofoam. You could get them at lowes/home depot

I know what he's talking about because I even have it, just don't know what it's called. It's a black, no slip mat stuff that's much more flexible (comes rolled up) than styrofoam and is more like a mat for shelves or cabinets.

I have nothing between my tank and stand. My tank is acrylic and I spoke to the manufacturer about this when it was time to set the tank up. They said it wasn't necessary.

They don't suggest it for acrylic, but they do for glass.
Actually, it should be the other way around. Glass tanks sit on the plastic trim, so the stand can be open in the middle. Acrylic tanks on the other hand, are completely flat on the bottom, so they need to be even supported and need a stand that has a flat top to it, like a sheet of plywood. Lots of folks take it a step further and add styrofoam so it sits completely flat and level.

I use interlocking EVA foam work-out room mats. I lock the number of pieces needed for a specific tank and trim the excess with a utility knife. They're easy to store stacked and flat and are available in an assortment of colors to make each bare-bottom tank a bit different from its neighbor.
