There are many colorful fish out there in the hobby. I know that color isn't the only thing that attracts an aquarist to keep a particular fish. Goodness knows, I've got plenty of "grey" fish (as my wife frequently points out) that are definitely worth keeping. But one species of cichlid from the southern Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and Belize stands out as one of the most colorful of freshwater fish . It is Paratheraps synspilum, or "red headed" cichlid for those that like a common name. I've presently have six of them (3 pair I think), the males at around 8-10" and the females 6-7". Here are a couple of pics of them.

They are among some of the most beautiful around. I have also heard the remark "Oh another brown fish!" just to try and dampin my excitment over a new species I just aquired. I'm sure a few of us on here can atest to that.

Nice lookig Syns very healthy. What size tank are you keeping them in? Any full tank shots?

Wow. I hope my pair turns out like that.

Great fish. I have had 4 for 2 1/2 years. I think they are all female. Low aggression. Never fight and lip lock.

Non fish people never "get it" with brown or grey fish but who cares? What do they know? My little brown acara (cichlisoma portagensis) had as much personality like a border collie. Died after 7 years 14 years ago and still one of my favorite fish.

I can only hope my new pair of these things look half that good, GREAT looking Jim. More Pictures please, tell me about the tank!
