Just wondering if breeding 2 blue genes will get a batch of 50% EBJDs? Bought 8 EBJDs and 5 BGJDs from 2 sources and all the EBJDs died! Will the fry from 2 BGJDs have stronger genes? Really want to raise some EB! :irked:

What is your water testing at? What size is your tank? How did you get them in the tank? How long did you have them? How long have you Had your tank? What size did you get them ? Yes EBJD some times have weaker genes. If you got the BGJD from the same place I wood not breed them but thats me.

Breeding BG x BG will yield 25% blues...

But since yours are siblings I would highly discourage breeding them. There is enough inbred garbage Blue Dempseys on the market, no need to contribute to that...

The 2 are from different breeders so shouldnt be related. They were both about an inch or so when bought, now between 2 and 3inches. The tank they were in when the EBJDs died was a 60 gal high that all were in with some other small centeral americans. Only 1 of the EBJDs got picked on. I gave 3 to 2 different friends and they died too? All bgjd are alive except 1 i moved in with the big boys too soon and was murdered. Ph was at 7 and water was changed 25% a week or so. Also I have had the tank for about 5 years.

From my experience ebjd are weak as hell.

I doubt breading your own will net you anything better then the average LFS offers. Since there stock was probably bread using same manner you are gonna try to do.

To breed something really tough you would really need to go nuts and make it multi generational letting nature taking its course and only using the strongest JD you bread. Of course this would take years.

Luckily the 2 i got rid of before they all died were traded for 3 tiny flowerhorns! They are not stunners but still small and at least ALIVE! They are about 2 to 2.5 inches and were half an inch when I got em. Way stronger fish! Maybe EBJDs aren't for me? I have an electric blue Ahli in my African tank so I guess that'll do for now!

What did you feed them?...
It is my understanding that they (EBJD's)are actually runt runts, and need to be fed live baby brine shrimp hatchlings, multiple times per day,
and still yet the mortality is high...

I was alternating freeze dried brine shrimp saturated with nourish and sera san color and growth flakes. at least one feeding of each per day. Seemed to work with flowerhorns, texas and BGJD. Everyone else in the tanks seem to thrive and love it!

I purchased 2 EBJDs June 22,09. 1 year 11 days with me, 1.5" when I got them, now 5". Both are doing really well. 1 eats everything. 1 eats only frozen food. Both have been kept by themselves (seperate tanks) . I have picked up a female reg JD (has to grow out) with the hopes of breeding her with 1 of my male EBJD. Then I am hoping to breed a female from that with the other male EBJD I have. I am hoping to have EBJD fry in the next 3 to 4 years.
