My dad and I are purchasing a 8'x2-4' all glass and are intending to keep large American cichlids (jag will probably be the biggest cichlid)

I've got a 12'' bgk i want to house in it, i'm just wondering will he make a good meal for these fish when they're a bit bigger? I want to buy a few cichlids and grow them out in one of my 75's.

cheers

BGKs don't have the same level of aggression as large American Cichlids. You would have to make sure that it had plenty of cover and the most easy going American Cichlids as tankmates IMO. Jags are territorial and can be very nasty to other fish that intrude on its turf. Your BGK could be seriously hurt or killed in a fight with a Jag. It all depends on the number and types of cichlids that you want and the aquascaping of the tank.

I would say no, even on little cichlid can bully and tear at a bigger BKG till death

I had experimented keeping a 7 inch BGK in a tank with a 7 inch Jaguar (male).

I didn't give a damn about aesthetics and gave the BGK had very very good cover.. Yet, it didn't work and the BGK had an injured tail and torn fins and I had to put him back into his old "grow-out" tank. (He is doing alright now..)

The main reason BGKs does not go well with Jaguar is because BGK are not as good swimmers as cichlids and (more importantly) do not retreat fast enough when charged on by a Jaguar.

I would strongly advice NOT to keep a BGK in an aggressive CA/SA set-up with Jaguars and similar aggressive cichlids.

I think BGK will be OK with Severums and other non-aggressive or semi-aggressive Cichlids (provided BGK is considerably larger).. However, against Jaguars it has very little chance..

Good luck,
Sid
