OK so my BGK is going on his fifth day sense coming home and is doing well from what i can tell. Hes currently in a 29G grow out until February and is only about 3". Right now im feeding him blood worms exclusively and I would like to vary his diet a bit but money is tight so something on the less expensive side is preferable. I would also like to know what size tank I should upgrade to as im hoping he can live in it for the rest of his life. Ideally it would be a community setup with a few different species so I would also like to know what would make good tank mates in the future?

You might want to try chopped up small red wiggler worms to feed him. BGKs love worms and they are very high in protein.

As far as housing goes, it really depends on if you want him to have tankmates or not. If tankmates, how many and what size will they get up to. I'd say nothing less than a 75-90 gallon for a BGK and tankmates comparable to maybe 5 yo yo loaches, some cory cats that grow in the 3-4 inch range and a couple of rosy barbs. If you want more, you should get a 6' tank. Just my opinion.

I can fit a fairly large tank and im not to sure what i want to house him with but i will look into a 6 footer. would it be good for him if i threw a few flakes in with his blood worms for more nutrition? i would also like to know if he would pick off any ghost shrimp i put in there?

BGK are good with none to little aggressive fish, like Bichirs, Dats, Gouramis, etc. I've had mine with a small community with Tetras Cories, and small Cats to more robust non-aggressive fish such as Bichirs, Dats, and a Fei Feng.

You can also get sinking pellets and break it up since it's pretty small right now. They aren't too picky, but in my experience, some fish need to see other fish eat certain food before they realize that it's edible. And if the Ghost Shrimps are small enough, it'll go for them.

dats will get big, he might eat the bgk thinkin it was a small fish or something.

I agree, but I think a silver dat would be okay with a BGK for life as they max out at 12 inches. Just be sure the knife is larger than the dat.
