bgk tankmate selections

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok. cuz i got some african brown knifefish and they dont seem to be holding up but i think it may be because i have more than 1, so im thinking that a black ghost knifefish may fare much better in the tank.

Are you planning on putting the BGK with the ABK? If so, I wouldn't. BGK will sense the electrical pulses that the ABK puts out and may kill them. BGK are the most territorial Knife that I've dealt with and 95% of the time, they don't do good with other Knives in the tank. I would trade in the ABK if you're going to get a BGK. But a BGK would be better with Angels...they basically have the same water chemistry.

i wouldnt have them in the same tank. i might get one if my last abk dies though. my other big abk is growing the same slime stuff on him now, and its seems to be building up by the hour. doing a water change soon.

ok. yeah if these abk's dont turn out well (wish they would have.... i love them), ill see about getting a bgk. do they grow fast? or can they be kept in a standard 55g tank for a few years? i think my problem with the african brown knifefish is that i had three in the tank instead of 1.

btw benz, just finished water change of about 20%, slimey stuff is still there, used stress coat added into water, but the big one with the problem was playing in the stream of water going into the tank......odd.

I'd say you've got it right and multiple ABK's is the reason they didn't do well. I really want to get a BGK to put with either my Angels or Discus. I need to figure out how to get tanks changed around to get them in a bigger tank though. Don't the BGK's get 12" or so? They're sure pretty fish and would do well in the 80's temps that either Discus or Angels like.

yeah they like the higher temps. mines always at 78 and the heater pops on alot so its tryin to stay hot(ter). the younger ABK has been doing fine all along, but ill see if i wake up tomorrow and find the bigger one layin in the gravel. he mustve liked the water change.

bgk are slow growers, they will grow to 3-4 inches in a year. minimum tank size for a adult bgk is a 75g tank.
