I am planning on going away for a couple of weeks one day. I keep cichlids ABN (albino bristle nose) & BGK fish. I have two EHEIM auto feeders I got my hands on cheap. So the cichlids be alright. The feeders are on proper time & can feed 4 times in 24 hours to the minute.

I have a 10cm & a 15cm BGK fish in separate tanks of course. I place they food in a PVC tube they hide in, so the cichlids can't get to it.
I realised I could use the auto-feeder to drop some cichlid pellets at midnight for the ghosts, but I am not sure how to train the BGK to take this food quickly.
I am feeding the BGK soaked carnivore pellets every second day, alternating with frozen blood-worms.
I know for a fact that cichlids will smell the pellets in the water & will seek out the food even in pitch black & they don't wait around for no BGK to eat first.
The cichlids also eat the algae wafers for the ABN that the BGK likes too so I am not sure how I'll feed the ABN either at this point.

Even if I get someone to feed the ABN with boiled veggies, how am I going to get someone to get near a BGK coming at them hungry? :nilly:
Live food is not an option due to the larger cichlids & I don't support it. Besides they kill the feeder fish, eat the head if at all & leave it to decompose :screwy:

Please, any ideas are welcome!

can you use freeze dried bloodworms in auto feeder?

I am sure dried BW would clog fairly well, even if polverised :nilly:

I am thinking of building an upside down T (dual acces at the bottom) or just an L shaped PVC tube shoot, to restrict access.
During the day the ABN would get in & at night the BGK. There is a chance, smaller fish could enter, but if I make the T section long/dark enough it may just work :naughty:

I would have carnivore pellets mixed with crushed algae wafers or just use low protein content pellets in the feeding drum. Of course that means I need more fishfeeders :WHOA:

I may have to do a DIY thread if I get it going

When the BGK gets hungry enough, it will come out to feed. I've kept a BGK with Pbass and it ate just fine. Nothing to worry about too much. If you're feeding at night as well, it will already be actively be hunting for food. It'll find it fine. You can also test it out for a week or two now to see if it seems like it's getting enough food.

Why don't you set up the auto feeders now and observe them for a while before you leave? That way you will know for sure and be able to make any adjustments needed.

Yes Clockwork, I was thinking of running the feeder on minimum setting in the middle of the night & cutting back on the BGK food to encourage it to look for food in the dark. I need to get more suitable pellets for the job & pick an apropriate time for it tough :D

Here is a head-shot of my 6in BGK. I wonder if it is a M or F...

Yep, they accept the sinking NLS 1mm just fine after a while :grinno:

However, they don't touch NLS Thera +A with loaded up with garlic

The BGK's are active & browsing all night I recon, we just don't notice it, because we all are busy sleeping.
They are fairly active during the day as well since I got the plants in the tank & eat some of the food I feed the cichlids!
Thank you all for your support :headbang2
