Bichir addicted to eating fish...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes very possible because it was hunting down mollies and eating them.
I guess that means I need to get rid of it then, the fish will only be a liability later on considering it was trying to eat a pleco that was literally wider than it, and trying to ram it into its mouth before giving up, I can only imagine its gonna do the same for the other fish eventually? Unless anyone knows of ways to pacify the fish?

Most like myself wean fish off live to help improve the situation of predation in our aquarium. Not saying it would absolutely stop a fish from instinctively going back to trying to eat a fish. What are you feeding the bichirs?

Hikari massivore and Algae for the plecos and flakes for the silver dollars i have
I never fed it live food I just put it with medium sized mollies when I first got it as that was what I had in my other tank as I was uncomfortable putting it with the other bichirs and SAL. So it was able to hunt mollies without me noticing for several days as I thought it was too small to hunt fish. It subsequently was put in with the other larger fish and was doing fine until I caught it trying to eat a pleco that was too wide for it and I assume the armor on it made it hard to eat too so it gave up, thankfully armored catfish aren't good meals. But what scares me is that the pleco was about half its length and wider than the bichir and still it was trying to kill and eat it, which makes me think he will start going after the other bichirs when its bigger or the SAL which is more likely due to lungfish having softer skin that isn't armored like the bichirs and plecos

I personally would observe and make sure the smaller lapradei is getting food. Also hopefully other bichirs and SAL will be large enough not be eaten once lapradei grows larger.

All fish are well fed, i have been overfeeding since i put in the plecos as they werent intended to be there but i had to relocate them there due to circumstances. I would have thought and overabundance of food would make the plecos not slime coat suck which was my main fear, but instead the opposite happened. Either way I've heard tales of bichirs biting and death rolling meals which is what i fear, although I've never kept a large polypterus and the SAL will be larger than most bichirs.

I'd not trust the lap with anything smaller than it will eventually get which is most other bichirs. I've seen it work I've also seen it not work. I've had more issues with the larger growing bichirs then with the smaller and this wasn't even with them being full grown. Rereading this I'm unsure if I'm getting my thoughts across.
