Hi! Just want to know if aggression is common with bichirs. I have a 4" ornate bichir and a 4" cuvier bichir. Im planning to keep them together, is this safe? They will stay with a 4" oscar.
my ornate is slightly aggressive, the others are not.
I have seen the rope fish fight with each other and the two sens occasionally nip at each other, but i wouldn't call it aggression... just showing who is boss. and it is rare.
When I got a second senegal, my first larger one tore the crap out of his tail and pectoral fins and didn't stop until I got some ropefish. Now they are totally fine together.
They should be fine for now. But a word of caution ... Eventually the oscar will get too big... probably sooner than the bichirs. I had a beautiful oscar I got at about that size, and before I knew it, he was pretty big. I really liked him, but had to trade him in when I saw him carrying around my bichirs in his mouth like they were dog bones. I know oscars don't have teeth, but it wasn't something I liked seeing (especially because he loved to carry around Harley, my Ansorgii).
Best of luck! I'd say go for it, but have a back up plan just in case.
mine bites things that are sitting still, in front of his face that are less then half his size, as long as the fish are bigger then him you should be fine.
i have an albino senegal BTW.
i had an oscar with my albino bichir just fine, but they were the same size, my other fish eventually killed my oscar
but ya, as long as the oscar stays smaller or the same size (which wont happen when both are at the same size, oscars grow 1-2" a month), they can live fine together.
