Bichir breathing space

From the top of my glass to the surface of the water its about 1/2 inch - 1 inch, is this enough?

I find it better to give them a few inches. Sometimes they casually swim up and take a breath, other times i have seen them rocket up shoot their heads out a few inches above the water.

3 inches is really the safe minimum breathing gap-Anne

more would be better. could you just lower the water level a bit?

I am trying to figure how to lower my water level, i have a pre-filter box thingy in the tank.
