Hi, I just got a 3 foot long 40 gallon tank, whats the biggest/coolest bichir I can keep in it and what tank mates do you guys suggest? I want to keep something with the bichir that will swim in the middle to top area. Thanks.

36" tank is to small to permanently house any bichir IMO, but if i were to try it id go for a senegal, as as far as i know they are the smallest growing.

for your tank size i would get a senegalus, they are nice polys and have great personality, but definitly they are the least colorful.

I disgree. I think a 40 breeder would be fine for senengals for life. I have yet to see one much longer than 12" and a 40 breeder has a 36" x 18" footprint. And bichirs aren't exactly the type of fish that need big stretches of open water to swim in.

Exactly what I was thinking but I just wanted to make sure there was nothing with some kind of pattern. What can I keep with it, I don't have any ideas.

can try freshwater butterfly fish...upper dweller from africa too...
but make sure ur tank cover up

I've seen butterfly fish before, I don't really like them. I want the senegal to be the top predator in the tank too, I just want some thing to swim around to look at when he's not visible. What else do you guys suggest?
