My 4" del external gills are comeing back if that even possible.....? will they go away?

previously, similar thing happened to one of my bichirs, but when I moved him into a tank with a power head, the gills slowly disappear.
 
External gills is connecting with oxygen content in water, if its poor oxygen then external gills became longer and if its rich oxygen then external gills became short, but that until the adult age (hehehe I don't know how month). so as u can see in my avatar the gills is long because i don't use aerator and pump.
But that my thinking, sorry if I'm wrong

ok good to know...
 
my delhezi is 5" and his gills are almost 1". i have 2 hobs and a air stone in my tank so there is plenty of air. the smaller delhezi, 3" has almost no external gills. wierd hehe.
