Dont freak out, he'll go into a 125 gallon.

But if i get him small, around 3-4" he may be too small for my cichlid tank and could be mistaken for a worm. I would buy a larger one from the start, but there are none. The only ones being sold are still very small.

Could i keep a bichir in a 10 gallon untill he's about 6" or at least big enough not to get sucked up by an Oscar or JD? (which i'm assuming would be around 6")

Cool, what exactly IS their growth rate anyway?

Its what I do keeping them in a smaller tank to grow allows them to eat without compitetion
so I can monitor food intake, growth and any health issues.
Growth rate can vary but generaly an inch to an inch and a half is not uncommon thill 7-8 inches then it slows-Anne
