Purchased a 6" bichir from my local fish specialty store, gave the lil fella a 20% chance surviving the night in my tank with a 16" florida gar.
When I asked about what they had in bichirs they led me to 2 albinos about 3" long and I knew they didnt stand a chance beyond the fact I dont want pink fish. so I put my 60$ down on the ornate 6" and gave him a terrible survival rate just thru 1 night.
at the store the gal had to smack this vase that he was hiding in like getting the last drop of ketchup out of the bottle and he went right back in there while I tried to con my wife into letting me get it.
wife said go ahead but he will be gone by the next day, so I rolled the dice on him.
Got him home and over fed the gar to keep his mind off the new guy.
after 2 hrs of watching him it looked safe and we decided to go have a smoke and upon our return he was gone.
we both figured that "Brutus" waited for us to leave the room and devoured him for territory issues if nothing else.
9 days later..... I go in my room to get out of my work stuff and see him swimming around like nothing ever happened.
couldnt believe it after 9 days there he was.
He likes this ceramic fake wood structure I have and thats where he stays, It has a hole in it that he found and went inside.
Just seen him today @ the hole lookin out and fed him blood worms in the hole and he feasted quite well while staying inside his bunker.
I was curious if this is normal for this to happen with the total hiding. I thought he was long dead many times in the last few weeks.
He does not fear the gar and when hes out has no problem at all hangin right next to him and makes contact with him with no fear. Ive seen him swim right in front of his face almost defying the gar.
He has no fear and is amazing or hes stupid lol.
Either way hes my boy and im very proud of him for making it this far.

I have only 1 pic of him i took the day we got him, hard to take more as he doesnt come out of his "bunker"
I guess I cant blame him the gar is huge and hes not. I am hoping to put some weight on him so he can be out and not worry.
I have more cave type things for him to make a home in once he cant fit in the hole anymore.
I want him to outgrow the hole so I can see him more than once a week.

From what I recall when I had my ornate bichir. They are cave fish. And I think I read that they have poor eye sight. So they will be more active at night. It's always good to read about your fishes natural environment.

I remember when I got my bichir he just sat on the bottom hiding. My small school of tiger barbs were not following the rules I read in text books about how they will not pick on other fish if you have a school of 5 or more of them. Well the entire day I put the bichir in his new home. They were picking on him like crazy. I told my tiger barbs if they kept it up the next morning. They would go to the petstore. Next morning there were 3 missing tiger barbs. And no one was messing with him ever again. So yes... It's natural. He is a nighttime dark dwelling fish. I fed mine supper and wax worms.
