Bichir Observation...

mine loves rosies that i quarintine for about three days and my ornate did the same to my 3" syn. eruptus catfish and know he is gone completly. bichirs are great hunters but do more by smell and movement then sight alone and for that reason i will break a couple of rosie's tales and then put them in to make it alittle easier for them to catch, but if you put them in there at night definitly gone by next day. My bichers love earthworms, prawns and beefheart.

The behaviour describe is typical bicher hunting behaviour. My sengal polished off two of my small bullheads. They are amazing predators when they want to be
 
Another question... do bichir actually tear pieces off of their prey? Or are they pretty much limited to food items that they can take in one piece?
 
when mine couldnt take the beefheart cubes whole they would tear pieces off.
 
I only feed pieces sized to take in one bite I have head stories of bichirs choking to death
on food thats to big to gulp down.While they can and sometimes spit food bacckout it can be hard everything behind the jaws is designed to make food stuff a one way trip-Anne

What kind of inverts can you put in with a bichir? I know the "if it fits in its mouth" rule still applies, but are there any special considerations? I know better than to put a large crayfish or lobster in with it, but I'd like something else in there like that, whether it be for food or as a tankmate...

(and I'm good on snails, so those don't need to be included...)

Theres not a lot of freshwater inverts other than shrimps or crays and your 29 gallon tank
really isn't big enough for much more once little buddy hits full size(love the name)

as for your newest project go with the 120gallon its bigger the only difference between the 75 and 90 is the height and you'll be needing length and width and in fact a 180 would be your best choice
75 Gallon 48x18x20 third choice
90 Gallon 48x18x24and coming in fourth
120 Gallon 48x24x24 second choice
180 Gallon 72x24x24 Would be my first choice
