I'd say there's a risk that they'll swallow some. Sand is your best bet.

Hmm not to wurry i have sand in my other tank but found the ray seemd to mash the sand up and it ended in the filter sand the sump:(

I use fine black sand in my tank, as a lot of ppl advised not to use gravel as poly's mite eat it, i personally have not kept ploys with gravel but i believe that it is very possible that a poly will eat a piece of gravel that smell like food.

I actually think that it's the gravel I use. It's REALLY small, almost sand grain size but I think it'd be too rough for rays.
I've seen some posts recommening it for rays , sands bes tbut can get messy. Might have to go back to sand and find a way of stopping it getting into the pfilter and the sump;

sponge over the intake. You'd probably have to clean it pretty often, but it should filter out the sand before it gets out of your tank.

They told me at my LFS that gravel would be fine, but within a week my senegal ate 2 gravel bits. I changed to sand the next day. This was a few months ago, and he still has the gravel in his belly. You can see it when he moves, he's ok for now (5" and growing like a weed) and hoping he gets big enough to one day poop them out before they do any real harm. I wouldn't have them with gravel, but if your gravel is as fine as sand, guess as long as if they accidentally ingest it they can poop it out run with it; I still prefer sand.
