I have a bichir that started getting reddish tail and fin a few days ago, and started looking paler. It (he) was eating up until about 2 days ago. The last two days he has barely been moving around, and i found him this afternoon just lying on his side. Still breathing.
Tested the water and changed out about 50% of it 2 days ago to help with possible ammonia poisining. He is the only fish but there are lots of snails in his tank. No live plants and no live food given. I feed him carnivore pellets and adjust how much i give based on how much he eats. He is about 4 years old. Our water is basic about ph 8.4 but that is the usual pH for the last four years. Between 8 and 8.4
The ammonia test was .25ppm, the nitrite was at 0, and the nitrate is at 30ppm. There is likely nothing i can do for him at this point but i figured it didnt hurt to ask. Also get suggestions for the future if i have another fish. He is my first fish. Left here by a roommate. My 3 year old and i love him so if we can save him please help.
Thanks for your help
Amanda

I’d do another water change and make sure to add a dechlorinator like seachem prime. Add kanamycin. Don’t feed for now. What were u feeding? How long has the tank been established? How often are u doing water changes?

Feeding a dry pelleted sinking carnivore pellet. Tank established for 4 years. Water changes weren't often enough as i was left this tank and fish by a roommate and didn't do my homework on best practices for tank care. (I have 100 animals on my farm and a 3 year old, but that is not an excuse. I research all the other animal care and should have done better by Herman)
