i picked up 2 seng bichirs about 8 months ago at about 1.5" and now one of them has grown to be about 7.5" and he other is still around 5.5" to 6" i was thinking that the larger one is the female and the smaller he male. i am just perplexed about the size diffrence

just like people, individual fish grows that a different rate that is the effect of nutrition, living environment, genetics as well as the biological functions of the body.

this does not necessarily indicate sexual difference, as polypterus' sex is actually differentiated by the size and thickness of their anal fins.

:iagree::iagree:
sometimes female tends to be more greedy and eat more, which would contribute to its growth. but as said, just because a bichir grows faster then the other in the tank does not necessarily mean its female. their growth depends on the factors mentioned above.

thank you guys i was just wondering. i have pics in my gallery could you tell from them if there a pair?

Looks like they're still pretty small to be sexed. On top of that, you don't have any pics of their anal fins in order to see if any sexual dimorphism has begun to show.

Try to get some shots of those fins and maybe we can tell. Probably too early though. :)

here is the best pic i cold get of cain the larger of the to.
